I sure am glad I finally gave this classic a chance because it now ranks as my top favorite anime movie. This film was made in 1988 and was based on the manga by Katsuhiro Otomo (if you'd like to give that a read, it has tons of extra goodies!). The story follows two best friends, Kaneda and Tetsuo, who are young delinquents living in a post-war Neo Tokyo on the verge of revolution. Tetsuo, after suffering a bizarre motorcycle accident, gets abducted by a strange organization that has been performing human experiments to try and tap into a subject's psychic strengths. Tetsuo uses his new power irresponsibly, and Kaneda is sent on his own crazy adventure to save his best friend. The animation is so unbelievably mind blowing! The attention to detail, even for background scenery and characters is so clear. The colors are astounding. And those classic motorcycle chase scenes really get your blood pumping! The soundtrack combines elements of traditional Japanese song and instruments to create a very unique atmosphere. If you're looking for an interesting and different science fiction film, please give Akira a watch. You won't regret it!
After a motorcycle accident, Tetsuo is taken away to a military lab, and when his friend Kaneda tries to rescue him, he discovers that Tetsuo has been the victim of an extreme experiment.
