This film came out as part of a wave of dark, gritty, superior Australian films (The Horseman, Snowtown, Van Diemen's Land, The Square, and The Proposition, among many others) and grabs you by the lapels from the first frame. The depths to which one family will sink to maintain their low-wattage criminal empire are engrossing and repellent. David Michod coaxes a surprisingly deep performance out of newcomer James Frecheville and Ben Mendelsohn and Jacki Weaver are bone-chilling in their villainy. Highly recommended if you enjoy hanging around with grubby, self-destructive criminals!
After his mother dies, seventeen-year-old Josh goes to live with his closest relatives who happen to be the notorious Cody gang and ends up in the middle of a murder plot, forced to choose between family loyalty and the police.
