Howard Sykes comes home from school one day to find a huge fellow with a tiny head in his kitchen. The Goon has come to collect on behalf of someone named Archer, who demands Howard's author father write him 2000 words or face the consequences. Archer is one of seven powerful beings who rule Howard's hometown from the shadows, and those missing words are about to cause the Sykes family a whole heap of trouble. This is one of my favorite middle grade novels, at equal times hilarious, suspenseful and downright surprising. This is a novel with enough to offer children and adults who are looking for something unique and love a good curveball plot twist.
After the Goon moves into Sykes' house and refuses to budge, thirteen-year-old Howard learns some startling information about his family, including the fact that he is adopted and that his father is connected with seven wizards who run their town.
