The Best of Comic Relief '90

The Best Of Comic Relief '90

In their fourth year of Comic Relief -- a series of comedy concerts to aid the homeless -- this collection is a winning, all-star lineup. Featuring ten-plus name-brand comics, the CD certainly does its job entertaining folks. There are so many entertainers and so many different styles to pick from, a listener is bound get a chuckle out of at least a few. This year, as in others, it is hosted by Robin Williams, Whoopi Goldberg, and Billy Crystal and proves a most excellent showing. So many comedy greats! Paula Poundstone does her highly noted bit on never getting a window seat in an airplane. Raspy and wacky Joan Rivers bemoans the horrors of donning a bathing suit in springtime. And Steven Wright and Rita Rudner (strategically placed side by side in the lineup?) mirror each other's wry and dry deadpan. Even Dana Carvey makes a rare live appearance in which he morphs a bit from Saturday Night Live sketch "Choppin' Broccoli" into suitable stand-up material. Regardless of the evening's theme, some comics are the same as any other night. Richard Lewis is depressed. Dennis Miller gets tangential. Whoopi Goldberg is all about the sex talk, while Robin Williams is as improvisational as ever. All of the stars make a convincing plea against the plight of homelessness. Some more thoughtfully than others. George Carlin fuses the issue with his act, which makes sense, considering his issue-based brand of humor. (He suggests tearing up golf courses and cemeteries as future sites for government housing and somehow manages to make it funny.) Other comics throw in a line at the end to cap off their act. Bobcat Goldthwait takes a no-holds-barred approach, interacting with a "plant" in the audience who dares him to shave his is head for the cause. Somebody just happens to have an electric razor. Even for an audio CD, this is fairly funny. And hey, if he can do that, the least you can do is send money, right? The crowd seemed to like it. You will too. Lots of fun stuff to be loved on this album. Definitely worth checking out. ~ Sandy Lawson, Rovi
