The Great Tommy Dorsey

The Great Tommy Dorsey

Trombonist Tommy Dorsey's strength as a big-band leader in the swing era was certainly his ability to solo, but more so interpret standards, with stock arrangements that appealed to a wide audience. He was also able to incorporate singers, the most prominent being a young Frank Sinatra. For those in need of a trip down memory lane, the 21 selections on this CD showcase material quite familiar to everyone, with hardly an obscurity to be found, save Rimsky-Korsakov's "Song for India" and Billy Hill's "The Call of the Canyon" (covered prominently by Gene Autrey). Dorsey was not known as a composer, but his "Night in Sudan" is included. Other vocalists besides Sinatra are Jack Leonard and Edythe Wright. The sound quality is only acceptable upon digital reproduction, rendering this CD to the bargain bin at best. ~ Michael G. Nastos, Rovi
