Green [25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition]

Green [25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition]

As far as major-label debuts by underground bands go, Green is fairly uncompromising. While it displays a more powerful guitar sound on "Get Up," "Turn You Inside Out," and "Orange Crush," it also takes more detours than Document, whether it's the bizarrely affecting contemporary folk of "The Wrong Child" and "You Are the Everything," the bubblegum of "Stand" and "Pop Song 89," or the introspection of the lovely "Hairshirt" and "World Leader Pretend." But instead of presenting a portrait of a band with a rich, eclectic vision, Green is incoherent. While its best moments are flat-out great, the band has bitten off more than it can chew; many of the songs sound like failed experiments, and its arena-ready production now sounds slightly dated. Nevertheless, half of the record is brilliant, and it certainly indicates that R.E.M. were continuing to diversify their sound. [Rhino's Deluxe 25th Anniversary edition of R.E.M.'s 1988 major-label debut is housed in a clamshell box and contains new liner notes from Allan Jones and various other visual tchotchkes (postcards and posters), but the real selling point is the second disc that captures a 21-song set the band gave in Greensboro, North Carolina on November 10, 1989, roughly a year after Green's release (part of this concert can be seen in the 1990 home video Tourfilm). By that point, the album had gone platinum in the U.S. and generated the Top 10 single "Stand" and, perhaps more importantly in regards to the strength of this live disc, the group had been on the road for a year, building the muscle to go along with their newfound popularity. R.E.M. does sound massive here as they tear into "Turn You Inside-Out," "These Days," "I Believe," and "Begin the Begin," but this power is also evident on the sweeter numbers, as "Fall on Me" and "World Leader Pretend" have a sense of majesty. During this arena alternative-rock workout, R.E.M. essay early versions of "Belong" and "Low" -- a pair of idiosyncratic songs that surfaced on 1991's Out of Time; in the YouTube era, it's difficult to imagine a big group testing out new material like R.E.M. is doing here -- both sounding marginally bolder than the finished versions, but that's because the band is playing with supreme confidence here. They're embracing their leap to larger venues and throughout this excellent show, they sound as if this transition from dive clubs to arenas is not only logical but inevitable. Naturally, that is reason enough for hardcore R.E.M. fans to pick up this anniversary edition (although some may mildly gripe about the lack of B-sides anywhere on this edition; slight though they may be, the instrumentals and cover versions that popped up on Green's singles would have been nice additions to the first disc).] ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi
