One of the founding ladies of rock & roll, LaVern Baker's hits "Jim Dandy" and "Tri La La" helped propel her to legendary status. This two-CD compilation features four complete albums recorded by Baker for Atlantic Records during the height of her popularity in the late '50s and early '60s. While she had big sellers with rock oriented tunes, her sound encompasses a tremendously wide variety sounds including jump blues, traditional jazz, blues, boogie-woogie, and even a touch of country. The first disc contains the albums LaVern and Lavern Baker, which showcases her edgier side. In addition to her hits, there are many great tracks including "Harbor Lights," "Mine All Mine," and "Tomorrow Night." The second disc contains her last two albums recorded at Atlantic Records, See See Rider and Blues Ballads. The first half of See See Rider is similar to most of the tracks on disc one, but as the titles imply on Blues Ballads she moves more towards a blues/jazz vocal style. A great collection that will surely satisfy those looking for a taste of one of rocks early divas, as well as her more devoted fans looking to skip the trouble of finding these tracks on worn out vinyl. ~ Curtis Zimmermann, Rovi
