Lolita
A beautiful book about a disturbing subject.
Humbert Humbert is in love with Delores Haze. Unfortunately he is a grown man and she is 12. He marries and gets rid of her mother, leaving with Delores, or Lolita. This book is beautifully written, and at its core it is about love. But the reader cannot ignore the fact that the main character is also a pedophile who is in love with a child. By the end of the book, I pretty much could not decide how I felt about it. It is eloquent when Nabokov, writing as the heart-sick Humbert, turns from prose to poetry and expressing his pain and obsession with Lolita. Of course, I also hated Humbert for destroying the child's life. The novel is controversial for a reason. I would recommend it to lovers of literature, but forewarn readers that the subject matter is very disturbing.
