Mechanica is certainly a unique take on the original Cinderella fairy tale. The world in which the story takes place is easily the most interesting part of the book. It's one of the few modern fairy tale retellings in which there are ACTUAL FAIRIES! Even better, the book's landscape is populated with all sorts of fascinating mechanical contraptions. In fact, my favorite character wasn't flesh and blood, but an actual machine. However, although the world was lovely, the characters lacked much depth and the relationships they develop can seem a bit stilted at times. Even so, this book is definitely something fairy tale fans should pick up. You won't find stepsisters like these in any other book, and, without spoiling the surprise, the prince doesn't fall into the same role he played in the original tale either...
