A friend sat me down to watch Moana more than a week ago and the songs have been lodged in my head ever since. I'll admit, I haven't really been into a Disney musical sense Aladdin, but now I find myself popping in this DVD and singing along with a David Bowie-esque coconut crab. Not really something I'd anticipated going in. Moana follows the journey of a young girl on a quest to save her island and restore the stolen heart to the goddess Tafiti, who originally created the archipelago. She needs the help of demigod, Maui. The story is fairly simple (take this from here to here) but the characters are engaging and wonderfully performed by Auli'i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson. Also, Alan Tudyk is an idiot-chicken. You can't really go wrong there. This is probably the most beautiful computer animated movie I've ever seen. The colors are vibrant and lush, the water and skyscapes shimmer with life, and the attention to detail (the serrated edge of a shark's tooth, or dripping hair) is mind-blowing. If you want a treat for the ears and eyes that will probably make you cry, try Moana. Just be prepared to wake up singing those songs.
"From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes Moana, an epic adventure about a spirited teen who sets sail on a daring mission to prove herself a master wayfinder and fulfill her ancestors unfinished quest. During her journey, Moana (Auli i Cravalho) meets the once mighty demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson), and together they cross the ocean on a fun-filled, action-packed voyage, encountering enormous sea creatures, breathtaking underworlds and impossible odds. Along the way, Moana discovers the one thing she's always sought: her own identity."
