A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness was recently made into a film, I did not read the book (I know, shame on me) but I was fortunate enough to watch the movie and from the moment it began I knew this was something special. The plot has a young boy named Conor (played by Lewis MacDougall) dealing with several hardships; a school bully, an absent father, an overbearing grandmother and what the plot is mainly focused on, his mother's illness. As the story unfolds the only thing guiding Conor through these hardships is his imagination (or magic if you choose to believe). A Monster Calls is an extremely relatable story with a fantastic cast that will have you captivated from beginning to tragic end.
"12-year-old Conor (Lewis MacDougall), dealing with his mother's (Felicity Jones) illness, a less-than-sympathetic grandmother (Sigourney Weaver), and bullying classmates, finds a most unlikely ally when a Monster appears at his bedroom window. Ancient, wild, and relentless, the Monster guides Conor on a journey of courage, faith, and truth. Based on the award-winning children's novel by Patrick Ness."
