REWORKS VOL 1

Reworks Vol 1

Erol Alkan was already a well-respected DJ when his remix of German techno duo Alter Ego's "Rocker" made a splash and caught the ear of indie rockers who needed something danceable but still tough and exciting. He did a mix of Death from Above's "Romantic Rights" and soon became a very hot commodity. This collection gathers up 20 remixes done between 2005 and 2015 for big names like Tame Impala, New Order, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and MGMT, while only scratching the surface of the work he did during that time. Listening to the remixes, it's clear to see why so many groups asked for his services. He has a knack for isolating the hooks, stripping out the excess noise, and re-building the song into something epic and sure to send dancefloors into a fever. Just the incredible things he does with Franz Ferdinand's "Do You Wanna" are enough to make him a remixing legend; that he does it over and over makes it even more impressive. He turns Hot Chip's "Boy from School" into a sub-aquatic banger without losing any of the song's melancholy soul, gives Metronomy's "The Bay" a whomping disco overhaul while keeping the vocals mostly intact, stretches the Scissor Sisters' "I Don't Feel Like Dancin'" into an epic-length electro-pop jam, and somehow adds even more muscle to Justice's "Waters of Nazareth." It's probably best to dip into the collection a song or two at a time, since listening to all of them at once can be a little overwhelming. Still, even if one does go from beginning to end, it's clear that Alkan doesn't just have one trick that he relies on each time. His true gift is making sure each individual song gets the thrilling makeover it deserves, something that this excellent collection proves he can do over and over again. ~ Tim Sendra, Rovi
