SPACE/TIME

Space/Time

Space/Time is the second full-length album by the quartet centered around primordial avant/psych guitarist Wayne Rogers and Kate Sunshine (aka Kate Biggar), both ex-Magic Hour with Damon & Naomi and ex-Crystalized Movements and longtime co-owners of the Twisted Village label and the Twisted Village retail store, both Cambridge, MA-based. The other two members include bassist Tom Leonard and Dave Lynch (ex-Vermonster) on drums. Space/Time begins, innocuously enough, with "Apples to Grapes," a moody acid folk that begins to transmogrify itself into a 14-minute freakout right before your ears, along the way combining elements found in free jazz, psych rock, and improvisational prog rock. "Runout" returns to a more traditional three-minute format, finding Rogers in fine voice. "It's a Blessing, Brother, I Cannot Lie" (previously only available on a now out-of-print 12" EP, Rock Sounds of People, from 1997) and "Getting Air From a Stone" are examples of Rogers and Sunshine's mind-bending, guitar-driven psych rock, while the nearly 11-minute psych juggernaut "Dream of the Accidental Bird" transforms into another improvisational jam and bludgeons the listener with its sonic flurry. Imagine Oklahoma's Flaming Lips -- during an early phase in their career, circa Oh My Gawd!!!...The Flaming Lips -- working out how to play all the parts to something off of Yeti by Amon D??l II, then turning whatever they've learned inside out and reassembling it again -- that's Space/Time. ~ Bryan Thomas, Rovi
