Good Witch Of The West

by Ogiwara, Noriko/ Momokawa, Haruhiko/ Beck, Adrienne
Strong female protagonist who doesn't let anyone get in her way.

This manga adaption of the fantasy novels by Noriko Ogiwara is a true gem! It is the spirited tale of Firiel Dee and her journeys through a spiritual kingdom that bans science in favor of magic. Firiel is a breath of fresh air; she speaks plainly of her feelings, is very strong, and is quite straight forward when it comes to her companion, Rune (whose mysterious past is dark and twisted). Her ties to her family, friends, and home are without unnecessary drama and tears. She faces each trial (from the loss of something dear to bullies in an academy) as best she can, with fiery determination. She is not without flaw and it was so rewarding to finally read a shoujo series with a protagonist who isn't afraid of fighting or feeling rage. The artwork by Haruhiko Momokawa is amazing. Much like other beautiful artists, she depicts the emotions in the panels flawlessly. Body proportions are well done, the backgrounds are amazing, and the flow of the story is easy to read and follow. I found myself simply staring at a page on more than one occasion just to admire the work. The only downside is that the manga continues until volume 6 and just... ends. There are only two novels that have been translated. Despite that, I still *highly* recommend Good Witch of the West as it's a huge breath of fresh air in the shoujo world, with gorgeous art and exciting characters. I can honestly say I have read dozens of titles and there are very few that can compare to the world mythos, the imaginative characters, and the creative plot.
