This book was not published until Bulgakov was dead, and even then was heavily edited. The book deals with a writer (The Master) and his lover (Margarita) and their dealings with Satan and his entourage. Satan and his minions terrorize the intellectual community of Moscow and force them all to realize their own hypocrisy. There is also a novel within a novel - The Master's novel about the story of Pontius Pilot and Jesus. Eventually The Master is driven mad. This book took many hidden jabs at Stalin and his regime, which is probably why it was not published at that time. Like much great Russian art, this book was written under oppression and the author never got to see the fruits of his labor. This book is great. It is interesting, insightful, and darkly funny. I would recommend that anyone who enjoys fiction or Russian literature reads this book.
Set in Moscow of the 1920's, this satirical novel recounts the dealings a writer and his mistress have with Satan
