The Three Musketeers

by Paul Anderson
This ain't your momma's Dumas

If you're expecting any sort of reverential treatment towards Dumas' work, turn away now. This movie is not for you. However, If you like your historical movies to have a bit of crazy and more than a little silliness, this movie is probably right up your alley. Let's start with the musketeers first, shall we? First off we have Mr Darcy playing Athos, Titus Pullo playing Porthos and Bard (as in the Hobbit, not Shakespeare) playing Aramis. If those three aren't enough to make you watch the movie then I don't know what else to tell you, except bring in Christoph Waltz as the evil Cardinal and Mads Mikkelsen as...some other evil guy...and you've got a pretty perfect movie. Unfortunately as awesome as all of those actors are, the exceedingly stuffy and boring D'Artagnan played by Logan Lerman (who?) calls to mind a poor man's George Michael Bluth. That's right, he's even more bland than Michael Cera. Next to the awesomeness of the rest of the cast (not excepting Milla Jovovich and Orlando Bloom, of course, who ham everything up to frighteningly awesome levels) poor D'Artagnan comes off as the least interesting member here. He's only a small step up from Chris O'Donnell, and that's not saying much. BUT! In the wake of a movie that ends up with a daring sword fight on the top of Notre Dame after two dirigibles shoot cannons at each other for about twenty minutes and then crash in explosive splendor (remember that part of the book?), I think one can overlook the slightly miscast D'Artagnan. If you want an exceedingly silly, dumb and crazy fun movie, The Three Musketeers hits the spot.
