This is a classic Young Adult novel about a boy and his love for his dogs. Billy Colman lives in the Ozark mountains and works in secret to save money for coonhound dogs. The first part of the book is his journey to get the dogs, and then the second part is him training the dogs to be the best coon hunting dogs around. As Billy trains the dogs, he forms a tight bond with them and they become his best friends. Of course, as with just about every "boy and his dog" book, Billy loses his dogs at the end. This is a great book and I think that adults will enjoy it just as much as kids. This is a great chapter book to give to an early reader, although be prepared for a strong emotional reaction from more sensitive kids. If somehow you never read this as a kid, then you need to read it immediately.
First published in 1961, a modern-day classic for children follows the friendship between a boy and his two dogs as they search out adventure along the dark hills and river bottoms of Cherokee country. Reprint.
