James Rice's lively illustrations make this a beautiful as well as

recognized as the South's leading author/illustrator of children's books. He is

Before Christmas . He also created the Gaston the Green-Nosed
Alligator series.
James Rice, born in Texas, studied art at the University of Texas and
Stephen F. Austin College. For many years he taught art and music at schools in
Texas and Louisiana. He is also an accomplished clarinetist and sculptor.
