Overview

A stunning collection of behind-the-scenes photographs of the lives of famous writers, artists, actors, musicians and social figures in Europe, New York, and Los Angeles, from the 1950s through the 1990s.

As the child of a rich, American father and a mother whose father was an impoverished Italian count, Camilla Pecci Blunt was well-placed to forge the path she did; her mother was passionate about the arts, took photographs, painted and collected artists. Camilla began taking her own photographs in the 1940s when she was in her 20s but came into her own in the 1950s and that decade is where these more than 700 mostly black and white photographs begin: on and off boats in the Mediterranean, skiing in the Italian Alps or at the artist, Cy Twombly's marriage at City Hall in New York.

After she married Earl McGrath in 1963, their homes--first in New York and then in Los Angeles--became gathering places for the mindboggling mix of writers, artists, actors, musicians and social figures who we see in these unbelievable, in-the-moment photographs: Jerome Robbins, Andy Warhol, Larry Rivers, Leonard Bernstein, Ezra Pound, Dennis Hopper, Frank O'Hara, Keith Haring, Ed Ruscha, Barbra Streisand, Sharon Tate, Joan Didion, Mick Jagger, Nancy Pelosi, Keith Richards, David Hockney, Jerry Brown, Linda Ronstadt, Jasper Johns, Michael Crichton, Bette Midler, Norman Mailer, and Rene Richard, to name only a few.

Together, Camilla McGrath's photographs are a fascinating, and irresistible look at the culture of the 20th century.
