Overview

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Signed with inscription to friends of the author on the ffep. In inscription McDonald states, "I certify this is a first edition of which only five hundred copies were published." Contains sensitive content: racial slurs and racism towards native peoples. McDonald, while key to the development of Haskell University's athletic program, was still a perpetuator of racist practices of the early 20th century towards native peoples. His writings though are some of the only surving accounts of these accomplished individuals making this text a key primary source on 1920s native athletes. The book contains McDonald's recollection of his time as a sports promoter and coach at Haskell Indian Nations University in the 1920s/30s. A large portion of the volume is dedicated to the much accomplished Arapaho footballer and baseball player, John Levi. The book contains several photographs of the different athletes including Buster Charles and Louis
