Mark Twain's account of his youthful apprenticeship on Mississipi River steamboats as a cub pilot in the decade before the Civil War. This is a first edition, early printing -- first state, "B" -- indicated by the mistaken caption reading "The St. Louis Hotel" on pg. 443, which was corrected to "The St. Charles Hotel" in subsequent editions, but lacking the first state, "A"'s illustration of the Twain's head in symbolic flames at the tail-end of pg. 441, which was removed from later printings at the request of the author's wife. Includes over 300 illustrations, with gold etchings on cover and spine. The binding remains tight, but the front hinge is partially detached between the cover board and front endpaper. There are approximately 20 of the 624 pages with small tears, creases, and folds, all appearing on the bottom portions of the affected pages.
