This is a great series for young adults who liked The Warriors series though it is intended for a slightly older age group. It can be a little violent at times, but it upholds good values without seeming too preachy. Redwall is an abbey where anthropomorphized animals live in harmony (squirrels, mice, rabbits, otters, beavers, shrews, and badgers are just some of the animals Brian Jacques uses in the series), and throughout the series, Redwall comes under attack by various forces (usually rats, cats, ravens, or other more menacing animals) and must be defended by the typically tame residents of Redwall. When they aren't defending their abbey, the adorable inhabitants prepare a feast, and Brian Jacques describes the feasts so well that it will make anyone hungry; he may have missed his calling as a culinary writer, but then we wouldn't have such a fantastic series.
When the peaceful life of Redwall Abbey is shattered by the arrival of the evil rat Cluny and his hordes, Matthias, a young mouse, vows to find the legendary sword which will help Redwall's inhabitants destroy the enemy.
