Tips for Book Storage and Selling to Us

  • When selling to us, find good, sturdy boxes or bags. Make sure that they are the right size so one person can lift and move one at a time when each container is filled with books. We suggest no more than 15 to 20 pounds.
  • Make sure to check your books for any stray items like, mail, receipts or money, you might be surprised what gets left in books.
  • When storing your books, keep them in a clean, cool, dry place, preferably indoors and try to avoid direct sunlight, as it can cause the cover and pages to fade.
  • Use bookmarks instead of folding the pages and don’t write in books. Doing this will help keep your books in better condition if you decide to sell them.
  • We appreciate every customer who chooses to keep resalable books and media in circulation. It’s economical and a great way to live a more sustainable life and reduce your carbon footprint.

Buying Policy

We pay cash for your books, printed or recorded merchandise, and limited types of software. We only buy merchandise in person at one of our local HPB stores.

  • We cannot make an offer until we see the merchandise.
  • Each buy is different and will be evaluated individually.
  • We'll make you an offer based on the condition of the merchandise and supply and demand.
  • Sellers must remain in store until the merchandise evaluation is completed.
  • When you bring us merchandise you want to sell, you must have a government-issued photo ID with you.
  • Sellers under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
  • We may ask to see valid proof of purchase for some of the items you sell to us.
  • State and local ordinances regarding buying and selling used merchandise will be followed.
  • We reserve the right to decline to buy merchandise.

As part of our mission to practice business with sustainability in mind, Half Price Books makes a conscious effort to donate to schools and nonprofit agencies around the world when we find that it is unable to be sold to the public; we also strive to recycle what we can if items are determined damaged, incomplete or compromised beyond repair.
