Overview

Donald Swann's song cycle writing music to poems from J.R.R. Tolkien's legendary series Lord of the Rings is a treat. This hardcover edition has gilded text on cover and spine, and features Barbara Remington's art from the 1965 paperback editions. The interior is printed with black grey and red ink with sheet music and text in red with Tengwar text (presumably written by Tolkien) in red and grey above and below the music throughout. Nearly every piece's music was approved by Tolkien himself save for Namárië which he hummed for Swann who then transcribed it for this work. While the Tolkien Ensemble has had their interpretations approved by the Tolkien estate this is the only one approved by the man himself. Each piece has vocal melody and grand staff for accompaniment which would be easy to arrange for any ensemble. This is an amazing find for fans of Lord of the Rings, folk music inspired by British folk tradition and beatifully printed sheet music.
