Overview

Written 70 years ago, 1984 was George Orwell's chilling prophecy about the future. And while 1984 has come and gone, his dystopian vision of a government that will do anything to control the narrative is timelier than ever...

- Nominated as one of America's best-loved novels by PBS's The Great American Read -

"The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command."

Winston Smith toes the Party line, rewriting history to satisfy the demands of the Ministry of Truth. With each lie he writes, Winston grows to hate the Party that seeks power for its own sake and persecutes those who dare to commit thoughtcrimes. But as he starts to think for himself, Winston can't escape the fact that Big Brother is always watching...

A startling and haunting vision of the world, 1984 is so powerful that it is completely convincing from start to finish. No one can deny the influence of this novel, its hold on the imaginations of multiple generations of readers, or the resiliency of its admonitions--a legacy that seems only to grow with the passage of time.

It was an eye opener since many things are happening now that are discussed in the book. Well written and easy to follow.

  • This book describes everything the Democratic party is currently doing

This book describes everything the Democratic party is currently doing. Its so sad, they are so brainwashed that they think they are doing the right thing by censoring speech they are told is bad.

  • Please, Please, Read this book people!

    Jeffrey J. - 5 years 2 months ago

I read this book when I was in my 20's and didn't quite get it. Now that I'm in my 50's, I get it! America's culture wars line up exactly with what's happening now. Everything from censorship, the dumbing down of words, the removal of statues, doing everything for the "collective", the abolition of family, letting the government tell you what to think and do, the removal of history - is in this book. Read it. Ahem, read this book AND the Bible and maybe you'll wake up.

  • Prophetic when written. A warning for our time now.

More important message than when I read it in high school years ago. Should still be required reading in high schools today.

  • A Prophecy about a future that looks similar to what we are about to face and how to recognize its snare

    Denise M. - 5 years 4 months ago

A revelation of Big Brother in a dystopian world where one has to navigate survival around the imposed regulations of a new world order.
