I remember reading this book when I was a little second grader and the story always stuck with me. In the story, their house burns down and Vera, the daughter, saves up loose change and her allowance to buy her mother a new little love seat. The story is simple enough but reading that a little girl could save up to buy furniture for her own mother is legit. When I first read the story, I too wanted to save up money the way she had and buy a nice little chair with flowers on it. When I found this book again, it was a real surprise.
