Praise for Deadly Education
"The can't-miss fantasy of fall 2020, a brutal coming-of-power story steeped in the aesthetics of dark academia. . . . A Deadly Education will cement Naomi Novik's place as one of the greatest and most versatile fantasy writers of our time."--BookPage (starred review) "A must-read . . . Novik puts a refreshingly dark, adult spin on the magical boarding school. . . . Readers will delight in the push-and-pull of El and Orion's relationship, the fantastically detailed world, the clever magic system, and the matter-of-fact diversity of the student body."--Publishers Weekly (starred review)0
I thought this was a wonderful book. It definitely is darker and I am excited for the remainder of the series to come out, but it is even good as a one off book because it concludes this year's main dilemma. The book was overall well written, but mainly, it was fun to read. #SpringPicks
I could not put this book down. The only bad thing was that the sequel hasn’t been published yet and I have to wait to continue the series.
I love Naomi Novik's writing in every form. This is a departure from the thoughtful fantasy of Spinning Silver, but it's still wonderful! If you thought Hogwarts was a dangerous place to send kids, wait until you see the Scholomance -- but El is fully capable of dealing with its treacherous classrooms. She can also handle having her life saved by the annoyingly capable Orion -- because she does NOT need his help. Getting all of their classmates to graduation will be a multi-book challenge for both of them, however. #SpringPicks
The setting is (in my opinion) a fresh take. I know Harry Potter has Hogwarts, but the world Novik created just feels different. However, while the setting was new, the plot was old. By page 50 I had guessed the ending as it relied on 50 different tropes. I did enjoy reading it, but it felt like a story I've read 100 times despite this being my first time reading it. #SpringPicks
Picture Hogwarts but the school itself is trying to murder all of its students. And there are no teachers. And maybe a fourth of the kids will graduate. And there are demons. And the main character is constantly having to stop herself from becoming the Great Destroyer of Worlds...So maybe Harry Potter is not a good comparison, but it is about a group of kids in a magical school, but darker, funnier, and definitely written for adults. The story is full of twists, turns, betrayal, friendship, and ends in such a way that the year I had to wait for the second book to be published was one of the longest in my life.
