Barkskins- not as good as Shipping News
HPB S. - 5 years 2 months agoThis is my second book by Proulx- I read Shipping News and loved it. Barkskins is a lengthy examination of indigenous interactions and intermarriages with the dominant cultures during the early fur trade and lumber pillaging in Canada, New England, Michigan, and then the Northwest through four generations of a family history. The landscapes are lush to desolate, the characters complex to predictable. Some of the sermonizing feel overwrought. If you have the time, it could be a winter read for you.
