DC's New 52 launched with a lot of fanfare; and, after reading the "Green Arrow Vol 1: The Midas Touch," I wasn't inspired to read any further. The plethora of Bat-titles padding the release schedule was one of the biggest turn-offs. Luckily, the gorgeous covers of J.H. Williams III finally drew me into the Batwoman series. Uncaring as I am for Bat-titles, Batwoman turned out to be one of the most visually arresting (partly due to the coloring by Dave Stewart) and well-written mainstream comics I have read in a long time. I was glad to see Williams balancing pencils while co-writing with W. Hayden Blackman. Maybe it's the oversaturation of Batman in popular media, but Kate Kane was a more immediately likeable character, with a well-established personality than the hundred-and-one Bruce Waynes out there. Whether it be Kane's strained relationship with her father, her reluctance to take on Bette Kane (her sister) as her sidekick, or her personal relationship, I found myself sympathizing more with Kane's tribulations than DC's other supers. Two-hundred words can hardly do justice to "Batwoman: Hydrology." Just read it.
