"Blissfully Romantic....A strange, terrific, spellcasting story." -- San Francisco Chronicle
"Bel Canto...should be on the list of every literate music lover. The story is riveting, the participants breathe and feel and are alive, and throughout this elegantly-told novel, music pours forth so splendidly that the reader hears it and is overwhelmed by its beauty." --Lloyd Moss, WXQR
"Glorious." --The New Yorker
Ann Patchett's award winning, New York Times bestselling Bel Canto balances themes of love and crisis as disparate characters learn that music is their only common language. As in Patchett's other novels, including Truth & Beauty and The Magician's Assistant, the author's lyrical prose and lucid imagination make Bel Canto a captivating story of strength and frailty, love and imprisonment, and an inspiring tale of transcendent romance.

This is a stunning book. I had the sense of holding my breath, as the story laid out the fragile stalemate between the dignitaries and their captors. As people began forming friendships, one character wished that the situation would go on indefinitely, and I found myself agreeing. The interactions between people who would normally never meet were filled with hope and possibility. With music woven though the pages, soothing the tense atmosphere, this is a powerful story not to be missed. #SummerReading
I finished this book on a train ride through the Alps a couple summers ago, and the combination of the scenery and Patchett's wistful virtuosity has proven unforgettable. The fluidity and airiness of her writing voice never ceases to amaze, and the ways she captures the shimmery magical moments within human life are a joy to encounter. A beautifully constructed story ruminating on themes of love, language, music, and compassion, this novel is perfect for your #SummerReading list!
One of my favorite books. Incredibly visual, stark while at the same time highly emotional and volatile. You LIVE this book as much as read it.
