Book 1 of the Berserk series jumps right into the story. It's confusing and violent; definitely weeds out the more squeamish readers before you get too invested in the plot. It's not a traditional setup, the backstory doesn't actually come into play until book 6, leaving many (myself included) wondering why exactly I should care about the main characters plot for revenge. However, if you are a fan of horror adventures with a deep and complex plotline, STICK WITH IT. The story centers around a man named Guts. The first three pages of the manga let you know exactly what you should expect out of the series; Guts slaughtering demonic monsters with wild abandon. He happily cuts down anyone and anything in the way of his revenge. Coming off as cold and emotionless, you will find out much later that this is not necessarily where his character development stops. With an incredibly tragic backstory, you eventually find yourself rooting for him and endorsing his wholesale slaughter. I'm reluctant to call him an antihero, he actually reminds me more of the old cowboy westerns where the main character comes through and annihilates the bad guys, all the while not being a particularly likeable character himself. However, by the end of the movie you're relieved that he gets to ride off into the sunset, seemingly finding peace once his vengeance has been extracted. If you allow yourself to be swept away in this series, you will find yourself laughing with him, crying with him, and ultimately growing with him as he learns to trust and welcome outsiders back into his life.
HPB Staff ReviewBerserk is the long-running story of Guts, a man doomed by fate, constantly forced to overcome every struggle to survive and get his revenge on the one man he viewed as his equal, Griffith. Kentaro Miura's series has been going on since the late '90s and still continues to this day; a true testament to excellent storytelling and incredible world-building. No manga/anime fan should miss it.
