This was an engaging read. I enjoy historical fiction, and this is a topic that I haven’t read about in the past.

I learn something new every time I read a novel by Ruta Sepetys. This book follows Lina a 15-year-old girl and her WW2 story. Most historical fiction literature I’ve read follows a character’s journey through the holocaust but this book shines a light on the awful things that happened to people at the hands of the soviets. It’s an amazing read and I highly suggest reading “Salt to the Sea” by Ruta Sepetys as well because it follows Lina’s cousin’s journey (I needed a box of tissues next to me when reading both books). #SummerReading

World War II, we typically think of Germany, Poland, France, Japan & the USA. What about Lithuania? How did WWII impact Lithuania? Between the Shades of Gray is a story about a young Lithuanian girl and her encounter with the Russian army also known as the NKVD. Through her eyes and her experience, I learned so much about the power of Voice & Perspective. Her story explains her family and their abduction from her home, to labor camps in Siberia. She talks about her day to day life with endless work and not enough food. She is accompanied with her mom, younger brother Jonas and an admirer. I recommend this book to any Historical Fiction fans out there that want to learn more about WWII from another perspective. #SummerReading

I loved the writing style, plot- just about everything. The characters were people you wanted to root for and when they hurt you hurt. I love how it shows a group of people who suffered during WWII that aren’t often talked about. #SummerReading
