Soon to be a film starring Sandra Bullock, Sarah Paulson, Rosa Salazar, and John Malkovich.
Written with the narrative tension of The Road and the exquisite terror of classic Stephen King, Bird Box is a propulsive, edge-of-your-seat horror thriller, set in an apocalyptic near-future world--a masterpiece of suspense from the brilliantly imaginative Josh Malerman.
Something is out there . . .
Something terrifying that must not be seen. One glimpse and a person is driven to deadly violence. No one knows what it is or where it came from.
Five years after it began, a handful of scattered survivors remain, including Malorie and her two young children. Living in an abandoned house near the river, she has dreamed of fleeing to a place where they might be safe. Now, that the boy and girl are four, it is time to go. But the journey ahead will be terrifying: twenty miles downriver in a rowboat--blindfolded--with nothing to rely on but her wits and the children's trained ears. One wrong choice and they will die. And something is following them. But is it man, animal, or monster?
Engulfed in darkness, surrounded by sounds both familiar and frightening, Malorie embarks on a harrowing odyssey--a trip that takes her into an unseen world and back into the past, to the companions who once saved her. Under the guidance of the stalwart Tom, a motely group of strangers banded together against the unseen terror, creating order from the chaos. But when supplies ran low, they were forced to venture outside--and confront the ultimate question: in a world gone mad, who can really be trusted?
Interweaving past and present, Josh Malerman's breathtaking debut is a horrific and gripping snapshot of a world unraveled that will have you racing to the final page.

A deadly force has been unleashed upon humanity and quickly spreads in this thriller. Whoever see's the creature(s) instantly engage in the uncontrollable act of suicide. Who is, however, the real "evil" force here: The humans who will do anything to survive or the otherworldly creatures. This book was recently adapted into the hit NETFLIX film of the same name staring Sandra Bullock.
HPB Staff ReviewIt's hard to find a book that is actually scary. This delivers a chill with an old-school feeling of a low budget film watched in secret in your childhood. It has a sort of nightmarish fervor to it that is largely due to its very simple idea. The writing invokes a desperate melancholy that is, as far as I've read, unique to Malerman. If you like horror, do yourself a favor and pick up this book!
HPB Staff ReviewBird Box is a novel I picked up on a whim, but I am so glad that I did. Without giving too much away (which is difficult with this one), the plot focuses on a woman named Malorie and her two children while she journeys down a twenty or so mile stretch of river. The catch? They are all blindfolded to protect their lives. The story is told on a constantly shifting timeline as the scene will switch from Malorie's current situation to the events leading up to not only her fate but the world's. Josh Malerman's writing is what really shines here. The amount of suspense and sheer tension within these pages is astounding. For anyone looking to get their heart rate up, you found your book.
HPB Staff ReviewI didn't quite know what to expect when I started reading Bird Box, but I was hooked from the very beginning. The author, Josh Malerman, presented a unique take on the post-apocalyptic genre, and I wound up surprised at how much I enjoyed the novel. Bird Box was a quick read (I finished it in one sitting!), but remained suspenseful and unsettling from start to finish. Malerman's characters are described in great detail, making it easy to really identify with the main character and to understand the world she must live in. The last portion of the novel was both thrilling and horrifying, and the ending managed to take me by surprise. I was extremely satisfied with the conclusion, and the novel has become one of my new favorites. Highly recommended!
