Overview

If no other knowledge deserves to be called useful but that which helps to enlarge our possessions or to raise our station in society, then Mythology has no claim to the appellation. But if that which tends to make us happier and better can be called useful, then we claim that epithet for our subject. For Mythology is the handmaid of literature; and literature is one of the best allies of virtue and promoters of happiness.

  • The Classic Book to Learn Western Mythology and Legends

    Jerry S. - 6 years 3 months ago

#SummerReading This storied work had been something that I had been hearing about my whole life with regards to books about mythology and I must say that when I finally at long last got around to reading it I was blown away even more than I suspected I would have been. Thomas Bulfinch began his work of creating this magnificent tome with the purpose in mind of introducing the common readership to the various myths and legends so as to educate them in the particulars for their enjoyment and to make the great many references to mythology in poetry and such discernible to the average reader who has not been formally educated in their study. Bulfinch does just that and more in this extremely impressive book; all of the literary references that he chooses to highlight in this work are incredibly interesting and he does a marvelous job of educating the reader on the myths and legends of our Western heritage. Truly remarkable and enjoyable book.
