I've read most of McCarthy books and I enjoy reading dark and gruesome tales. This book is gruesome. Other McCarthy books like The Road or Blood Meridian have messed up chapters/scenes, this whole book is a wicked telling of a man falling into insanity and depravity and the shenanigans he gets himself into. So if that is your thing, this book is for you.
If you only know Cormac McCarthy from reading his Border Trilogy or watching The Road, you're missing out. This little gem is one of his earlier Southern Gothic-type novels. You follow along on the adventures? Crime spree? Descent into madness? Of an outcast called Lester. In a rural, mountainous area where kinship ties are everything, he has none and suffers for it. It's not a good story; it's not a happy story, and this little paragraph cannot do it justice, but it's a story great and dark. Pick up a copy and give it a go.
