Overview

"A bold and subversive retelling of the goddess's story," this #1 New York Times bestseller is "both epic and intimate in its scope, recasting the most infamous female figure from the Odyssey as a hero in her own right" (Alexandra Alter, The New York Times).

In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child--not powerful, like her father, nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship, she discovers that she does possess power--the power of witchcraft, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves.
Threatened, Zeus banishes her to a deserted island, where she hones her occult craft, tames wild beasts and crosses paths with many of the most famous figures in all of mythology, including the Minotaur, Daedalus and his doomed son Icarus, the murderous Medea, and, of course, wily Odysseus.

But there is danger, too, for a woman who stands alone, and Circe unwittingly draws the wrath of both men and gods, ultimately finding herself pitted against one of the most terrifying and vengeful of the Olympians. To protect what she loves most, Circe must summon all her strength and choose, once and for all, whether she belongs with the gods she is born from, or the mortals she has come to love.

With unforgettably vivid characters, mesmerizing language and page-turning suspense, Circe is a triumph of storytelling, an intoxicating epic of family rivalry, palace intrigue, love and loss, as well as a celebration of indomitable female strength in a man's world.

One of the best books based on Greek Mythology I've read

I cannot accurately express how much I loved this book. The way Miller makes Circe both nurturing and powerful enough to scare the gods is so inspiring. A definite must-read for anyone.

  • Messy & Memorable Mythology

I was a little wary starting this book, but it didn't take long for me to become completely engrossed. Circe is an interesting character, and the details Miller uses to build the world of the Greek gods are wild. I especially loved the parts dealing with her sister Pasiphae and the Minotaur, and Circe's relationship with Hermes, Scylla, and Odysseus. Circe herself is very human, capable of both evil and good. The story format itself is also compelling, with a large part of the story handled as visits to Circe's island by the various characters.

  • Circe-great story overall and kept me wanting to know what was going to happen next!

I saw Circe on the New York Times Bestseller's list awhile ago be wasn't sure if it was something I really wanted to spend time reading. I have become very picking when choosing books to read during this pandemic and if they don't catch my attention from the first chapter I discovered that I often ditch them. Luckily this was not the case with Circe! I found her to be an intriguing character and really enjoyed this story. Readers learn more about the backstory of Circe and how she came to be. Yet another read the was difficult to put down and had a great ending! #SpringPicks

  • Recommend this book to all, even if you aren't interested in Greek mythology

My friend recommended this book to me and I was unsure about reading it because I don't feel strongly about greek mythology. It turned out to be one of my favorite books! At it's heart is a compelling story about Circe's growth into a strong, independent woman who is willing to go up against even the most powerful gods & goddesses. Highly recommend, whether you like Greek mythology or not! #SpringPicks

  • Circe, great read

    Stephanie L. - 6 years ago

I loved this book. I read it for one of my book groups. It was a little slow to start but after a bit, I could not put it down. I enjoyed reading how Circe came into her power, how she matured from being dominated by her family to standing up for herself. She stands up to Athena for her son's life and uses her powers and knowledge to protect him. I recommend this book, especially for women. #BannedBook

  • A winner

I "read" the book on CD and the narration added another dimension to the story which was compelling in its own right. The reader comes to understand Circe and care what happens to her. There is humor, pathos, sadness in the telling of her story. I finished wanting more and resolved to read Madeline Miller's other titles.
