This was the first Anthony Doerr book I read. I loved his style of writing so much, I read the rest of his books too. Fantastic author! Fantastic story!!!
First, I'll just say that the second I finished this book, I immediately thought, "I want to read this again right now." I'd read it on my Kindle, and as noted, it is a challenging book to follow, so I recommend getting the actual, physical book to make flipping back to check out who is who and where they are in time. Once you get that figured out, the book comes together beautifully. Doer is a wonderful writer and his descriptions put me right there with the characters who are brought to life as full, real people. He finds the humanity in them all, and we find ourselves sympathizing with the bomber who is holding children hostage. Stick with it and you will be rewarded. It's not a book for anyone looking for a quick, easy read, but if you like books that force you to think and books that bring history to life, read this one!
It was interesting but difficult to follow & not a book you could pick up & down without having to reread previous parts. I would not recommend this book. It was NOT what I expected based on his previous book All the Light We Cannot See — which I liked & previously discussed at a book club.
