Karin Slaughter launched her career as a bestselling crime novelist in 2001 with the publication of Blindsighted, which introduced Dr. Sara Linton and the Grant County mystery series. In 2005, Slaughter created another character, Will Trent, a special agent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. It was inevitable that Sara and Will would cross paths, which they did in 2009's Undone; it was also inevitable that when they did, sparks would fly. In Criminal, which was published in 2012, Will and Sara are together, but, well, it's complicated. What's even more complicated is the mysterious connection between the recent murder of a college student and the secrets that surrounded Will's birth nearly 40 years ago. What I really liked about Criminal-besides the suspenseful plot and likeable characters-are the frequent flashbacks to the 1970s. The story alternates between the present day and four decades ago when Will's boss and mentor, Amanda Wagner, was just starting out on the Atlanta police force. Slaughter has done diligent and detailed research, perfectly capturing the styles, mores, racial tensions and even the technology (or lack thereof) of the era. Criminal is a fascinating read, with enough plot twists and character developments to hold your attention throughout the book. Slaughter ties it all together-past and present-in a most satisfying ending. It's so good, in fact, it's criminal.
