What an incredible and timely story. Taking place in Ethiopia a constant in the background (and sometimes foreground) of this narrative is the unrest between Eritrea, Ethiopia and Tigray. This external conflict is equally matched with the emotions and trauma of the surgical theater. Two generations of stories come together in this book to weave the most beautiful tale of the connection of the family you are born into, that family that chooses you and the family you make for yourself. Following the life of one of two twins as he deals with unthinkable heart ache, love and passion for medicine. His story and that of his mother and father take the reader from India to Ethiopia, to NY and back again. This was the kind of read that I did not want to put down and did not want to end. So much so was my desire for more of this story that read the entire “Acknowledgments” postlude in the hopes of more glimpses into this story.
