Fascinating investigative journalism
Joe P. - 1 year 10 months agoDark Money is the latest book by The New Yorker investigative reporter Jane Meyer, who is probably one of the best investigative journalists of our time. This time, she uncovers the copious and often anonymous cash that is corrupting elected officials and universities, and the web of fake grass movements and phony non-profits that have a huge influence on the media's coverage of policy issues. Mayer traces the history of foundations that have been used as tax loopholes and tools of influence for a handful of billionaires, and how the situation has grown worse since the Supreme Court's Citizen United decision. The depth and breadth of influence peddling will be shocking even to the most politically aware readers. She quoted a Senior Republican National Committee member as saying, "A lot of centralized authority in the hands of a few people at those outside organizations is dangerous for our party." But as Charles Koch, whom she profiles extensively in Dark Money, says, "Politicians are just actors. We write the themes and the script."
