Overview

From the show's creators comes the groundbreaking, bestselling novel inspired by the hit Broadway show Dear Evan Hansen -- now in paperback!
Dear Evan Hansen,

Today's going to be an amazing day and here's why...

When a letter that was never meant to be seen by anyone draws high school senior Evan Hansen into a family's griefover the loss of their son, he is given the chance of a lifetime: to belong. He just has to stick to a lie he never meant to tell, that the notoriously troubled Connor Murphy was his secret best friend.

Suddenly, Evan isn't invisible anymore -- even to the girl of his dreams. And Connor Murphy's parents, with their beautiful home on the other side of town, have taken him in like he was their own, desperate to know more about their enigmatic son from his closest friend. As Evan gets pulled deeper into their swirl of anger, regret, and confusion, he knows that what he's doing can't be right, but if he's helping people, how wrong can it be?

No longer tangled in his once-incapacitating anxiety, this new Evan has a purpose. And a website. He's confident. He's a viral phenomenon. Every day is amazing. Until everything is in danger of unraveling and he comes face to face with his greatest obstacle: himself.

A simple lie leads to complicated truths in this big-hearted coming-of-age story of grief, authenticity and the struggle to belong in an age of instant connectivity and profound isolation.

I absolutely loved this book!! As an avid reader who usually reads a book once or twice and then moves on, this book made me stop and read it, not once, not twice, but 13 times! This book shows mental illnesses and characters that are so incredibly well-written and relatable. I haven't seen writing this good since 4th grade me discovered Rick Riordan! I absolutely love it and I think everyone should read this book! #SpringPicks

  • It's just like the musical with even more amazing details and scenes

It was a great book from the first page. You open it up and find yourself taken into the lives of teenagers who are going through some problems. The book, in my opinion, was so detailed that I could vision it in my mind and when I went and saw the musical, it was so similar.

  • Perfect for New and Old Fans

I love the musical Dear Evan Hansen. I saw it with the OBC, and my sad little anxious heart fell in love with it. Needless to say, I know the musical by heart. I wasn't sure how similar the book would be to the musical, but I was still curious to check the book out. It blew my mind. Even though I knew how the story would end, I was entranced. It adds so much more to the story while staying true to the plot. With some of the characters, it felt like I was meeting them for the first time. If you don't like musicals, this book lets you understand the story and appreciate it, without any of the parts of musicals you don't like.#SpringPicks

  • Dear Evan Hansen is a book that has almost perfectly encapsulated teen life today. Especially in regards to social media and peers. For sure something I'd recommend!

The book is fantastic! Well written, and you know for sure when songs are in the book. It was interesting to hear Connor's point of view, having never seeing the musical. I'd recommend this book to kids around 13 years old, and up. Of course, this is mainly due to material within the book (suicide, attempted suicide, etc.), but if a kid is able to handle it at a younger age, I would for sure recommend it.
