This book, collected from the letters that Van Gogh penned to his brother, presents a human and intimate autobiographical portrait of the great port-impressionist painter. Within his small triumphs and many disappointments that it chronicles, you can feel the lost and searching soul of this artist. Although his general biography is familiar to many and his art is fairly ubiquitous, seeing him struggle and lean on his brother, his best friend, for support is touching and enlightening. His moods are not always melancholy and the manias are infectious even after all the years since these notes were written. Not only do you get a small window into Van Gogh as a philosophical thinker and as a flawed human, you get to pick apart how he works, hearing his process as he comes to his craft. His love affairs (with humans and his work) are bared in tandem with his most profound thoughts on life, art, religion, and love.
