Overview

The harrowing tale of British explorer Ernest Shackleton's 1914 attempt to reach the South Pole, one of the greatest adventure stories of the modern age.
In August 1914, polar explorer Ernest Shackleton boarded the Endurance and set sail for Antarctica, where he planned to cross the last uncharted continent on foot. In January 1915, after battling its way through a thousand miles of pack ice and only a day's sail short of its destination, the Endurance became locked in an island of ice. Thus began the legendary ordeal of Shackleton and his crew of twenty-seven men.
For ten months the ice-moored Endurance drifted northwest before it was finally crushed between two ice floes. With no options left, Shackleton and a skeleton crew attempted a near-impossible journey over 850 miles of the South Atlantic's heaviest seas to the closest outpost of civilization. Their survival, and the survival of the men they left behind, depended on their small lifeboat successfully finding the island of South Georgia--a tiny dot of land in a vast and hostile ocean.
In Endurance, the definitive account of Ernest Shackleton's fateful trip, Alfred Lansing brilliantly narrates the harrowing and miraculous voyage that has defined heroism for the modern age.

An incredible true account of Ernest Shackleton's Antarctic journey. Some lovers of history can read anyone's account and find satisfaction, but most of us need a well narrated read that brings with it the wonder and emotions of an event. This is what you find in Alfred Lansing's account. Lessons in teamwork, leadership, courage, and trust are all found here. This is the second "greatest story ever told".

This is probably the greatest tale of survival against all odds. Ernest Shackleton saved the lives of every member of his crew. Others would have given up under the same circumstances, but Shackleton did not. If you've never heard this inspiring story, you should seek it out. It is worthwhile.

  • Great book; DON'T BUY THE TYNDALE EDITION. THERE ARE OTHERS.

    Michael P. - 6 years 2 months ago

Lansing's account of the Shackleton voyage to Antarctica is compelling, to say the least, and I recommend it as a story of almost unbelievable bravery and perseverance. HOWEVER: PURCHASERS OF THIS TYNDALE EDITION SHOULD KNOW THAT, ACCORDING TO THE FOREWORD, A PORTION OF THE PRICE IS DONATED TO THE HOMOPHOBIC FOCUS ON THE FAMILY FOUNDATION. FURTHER, IT IS STATED ON THE COPYRIGHT PAGE THAT THE TEXT HAS BEEN EDITED "FOR A CHRISTIAN AUDIENCE." if you don't want the book so edited, or a portion of your hard-earned money to go, without your permission, to a homophobic organization, there are other editions of the book to buy from other publishers. And Half Price Books should not allow such sales to be made on their site without the permission of a purchaser.
