Eleanor West's Home for Wayward Children

Children have always disappeared under the right conditions; slipping through the shadows under a bed or at the back of a wardrobe, tumbling down rabbit holes and into old wells, and emerging somewhere... else.
But magical lands have little need for used-up miracle children.
Nancy tumbled once, but now she's back. The things she's experienced... they change a person. The children under Miss West's care understand all too well. And each of them is seeking a way back to their own fantasy world.
But Nancy's arrival marks a change at the Home. There's a darkness just around each corner, and when tragedy strikes, it's up to Nancy and her new-found schoolmates to get to the heart of things.
No matter the cost.

PRAISE FOR EVERY HEART A DOORWAY
"Seanan McGuire has long been one of the smartest writers around, and with this novella we can easily see that her heart is as big as her brain. We know this story isn't true, but it is truth." -- Charlaine Harris, New York Times bestselling author of the Sookie Stackhouse series (TV's True Blood)
"Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire is one of the most extraordinary stories I've ever read." -- V. E. Schwab, New York Times bestselling author of A Gathering of Shadows
"Seanan McGuire once again demonstrates her intimate knowledge of the human heart in a powerful fable of loss, yearning and damaged children." -- Paul Cornell, author of London Falling and Witches of Lychford
"So mindblowingly good, it hurts." -- io9
"With Every Heart a Doorway, McGuire has created her own mini-masterpiece of portal fantasy -- a jewel of a book that deserves to be shelved with Lewis Carroll's and C. S. Lewis' classics, even as it carves its own precocious space between them." -- NPR

This compelling tale explores what happens after children have returned from portals to other worlds. Back in our world, they struggle to acclimate to their families, everyday life, and what their identity was before they left, so they are sent to a boarding school specifically for them. I loved McGuire's evocative writing style, and I fell in love with all of her characters. This was a quick read, such a heartwarming and thrilling story, and I kept thinking about it days after reading it. I was also pleasantly surprised to see all of the diverse representation McGuire gives us, which is so refreshing in a fantasy novella.
HPB Staff ReviewAn utterly unique, fantastical mystery that you can dig into as deeply as you like and find something moving, sparkling and entertaining at every level. It's a story about the young people who return, for various reasons, from the magical lands that claimed them as children, and what happens to them next. Think of Narnia, Oz, or Neverland, but in myriad variations, some dark, some dreamy, all distinct. Ultimately it's a story about accepting one's own identity, handled lovingly while pulling no punches. Recommended to anyone who's ever felt out of place.
HPB Staff ReviewThis is a novella series by Seanan McGuire about what happens to characters like Alice or the Narnia children after they've been expelled from the magical realms. What would happen to those children after the realms didn't want them anymore? Unable to live properly in a world with little magic or imagination? This tale starts at the Home for Wayward Children where parents send their children who were lost but haven't aged or were lost and they no longer recognize, they all have the same thing in common, they were all spirited away to other realms but for one reason or another sent back to the normal world. Each book in the series focuses on a different character and these books are the perfect size, able to tell the story in a beautiful and efficient manner. This would be for fans of Miss Peregrines, or Weymouth's Light Between Worlds, or The Magicians. Definitely a series to check out and look forward too!
HPB Staff ReviewThis book was weird and dark and a lot of fun. I'm not sure what I expected, but I was pleasantly surprised. Very easy/quick read. I will definitely continue on with the series. #SummerReading
