  • Imagine if Douglas Adams & J.R.R. Tolkein wrote a mystery novel...

Being a copper in Ankh-Morpork (the largest city on the Discworld) used to be a pretty simple affair: Walk the streets, chase the guy running away from the shouting people (usually the previous owners of whatever the running fellow is now carrying) and knock him about with your club when you catch up to him. But nowadays you have to solve crimes using 'clues' because finding a culprit is much more difficult than just arresting the fellow who starts to run as soon as he sees your badge. But, Commander Sam Vimes (head of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch) has adapted pretty well (by necessity more than by choice). Along with the help of Captain Carrot Ironfounderson (the only 6'6" dwarf on the Discworld - adopted) and Cheery Littlebottom (one of the first dwarfs to be openly female, call her Cheri, and the City Watch's first forensic alchemist), "Blackboard Monitor" Vimes (Don't call him that to his face!) sets out to solve a most baffling mystery. The bodies of three elderly Ankh-Morporkians have been found and the crime scenes don't have the clean, sharp look of your average Assassin's Guild jobs (Assassins are actually legal in Ankh-Morpork - it's complicated...). In fact many citizens feel that the clues are pointing toward the city's Golems (baked clay creatures that will work day and night without rest - pretty good deal for a business owner; not such a good deal for the golems). And these citizens are getting very mob-like (pitchforks and torches optional, but encouraged) in their beliefs. On top of this someone has poisoned Lord Vetinari, Patrician of Ankh-Morpork (a leader/tyrant sort of fellow; think Machiavelli - if Machiavelli had been trained as an assassin). Oh, and then there's the conspiracy... "Feet of Clay" is the 19th book in The Discworld series by Sir Terry Pratchett. Luckily, you don't need to have read the other 18 books in the series to enjoy this one. But, after you've read a couple of the books in the series, you'll probably want to read them all anyway. Over 30 years, Sir Terry created a series of books full of amazing, rich characters that you actually come to care about. Even though it is full of magic, this world is surprisingly (and, some may say, frighteningly) like our world. "Feet of Clay" is a fantasy/mystery/comedy that is really worth your time.
