Overview

"Fans of R.J. Palacio's Wonder will appreciate this feel-good story of friendship and unconventional smarts." --Kirkus Reviews

Ally has been smart enough to fool a lot of smart people. Every time she lands in a new school, she is able to hide her inability to read by creating clever yet disruptive distractions. She is afraid to ask for help; after all, how can you cure dumb? However, her newest teacher Mr. Daniels sees the bright, creative kid underneath the trouble maker. With his help, Ally learns not to be so hard on herself and that dyslexia is nothing to be ashamed of. As her confidence grows, Ally feels free to be herself and the world starts opening up with possibilities. She discovers that there's a lot more to her--and to everyone--than a label, and that great minds don't always think alike.

The author of the beloved One for the Murphys gives readers an emotionally-charged, uplifting novel that will speak to anyone who's ever thought there was something wrong with them because they didn't fit in. This paperback edition includes The Sketchbook of Impossible Things and discussion questions.

  • Fish in a Tree has the power to build empathy and understanding. It will make you laugh, cry, and will open your heart.

If I could give this book more than 5 stars, I would. I am a teacher and have read this book with my students, with my own children and have gifted it several times. Reading this book with a child who struggles in any capacity in school might allow them to feel less alone (the main character has Dyslexia, but another character struggles socially, another behaviorally and there are hints that one character has Autism). Likewise, if you read this with a typically-performing child or they read it on their own, they are allowed to peek inside the minds of children who struggle and it will likely build their ability to empathize. The main teacher, Mr. Daniels, does so many things right, but mostly he cares about ALL of his students and they know it. This book will make you laugh out loud, cry big tears, and will open your heart. It is powerful, beautiful, and includes characters who are realistic and relatable in any classroom. Hands down, one of my favorite books ever!

  • Amazing Book!

Ally always schemes plans so that she can hide that fact that she isn't able to read. But when she gets a new teacher, she is forever changes. Mr. Daniels understands what Ally is going through and wants to help Ally learn to read. Later it is known that Ally has dyslexia and that she shouldn't be scared of that. With Mr.Daniels' help, Ally learns how to read and realizes that not everyone is the exact same. This book is amazing and I would recommend it for anybody who enjoyed "Out of My Mind" #SummerReading

This is such a good read. Opens your mind and allows for you to look at everything with a different perspective. Must read, especially for teachers!
