One of the best books I have ever read. Baldwin has a way with words that no other author can compare. Extremely enjoyable read and very easy to get yourself lost into. Couldn't stop reading! #SpringPicks
James Baldwin is one of the most genius writers to ever live. He has a way of making mundane moments and human relations the most interesting thing in the world, and relatable even decades later and oceans apart. I had read a decent amount of Baldwin's non-fiction before picking up Giovanni's Room and I am in awe of his ability to cross genres in such eloquent and gripping ways. Read this book! You will not regret it. #springpicks
#SpringPicks. Heck - it's about the theory of what love is or should be. Why does love feel different at different stages in life with different people. *Spoilers* The main character David doesn't know how to love at first -- rejecting his first fling as a mistake because it makes him feel too vulnerable and tender. As he grows up, he notices the shortfalls of his father and thus loves and hates him for his crumbling image as a father in his heart. When he goes to Paris trying to "find himself", he falls in love with the city, not knowing he will gladly leave it behind in the fast-approaching future. He proposes to his girl while admitting that he is unsure of how much he loves her. When Giovanni shows him true devotion, he is both pulled in but quick to run away from it. It is dangerous to be near the kind of love that burns its host as the sole fuel feeding its flames. David openly despises his companions Guillaume and Jacques for chasing boys out of sheer bursts of loneliness and lust, yet he does something worse to Giovanni -- enjoying the sight of him dropping deeper into the well of blind love and letting him rot (quite literally) at the end. Surely David cannot stop Giovanni from liking him, but then again there are countless opportunities for him to cushion the fall. After all, you don't attempt to grab a man mid-air if you are no Sphinx. You drag him up when you spot him dangling from the cliff. Mercy. If life provides too little, find the strength from within to create more for others. Be more.
Saw this book on a must read list and could not agree more! A fantastic story that will have you reaching for tissues at the end. #summerreading
My god can James Baldwin tell a story! Throughout the entire book, I was enamored with the content and the story, even the characters (though I didn't love all of them). The way he tells a story is so unique and beautifully written, I adored this book and it has quickly become one of my favorites I have ever read!
