Overview

Why be the sheep, when you can be the wolf?

Seventeen-year-old Ismae escapes from the brutality of an arranged marriage into the sanctuary of the convent of St. Mortain, where the sisters still serve the gods of old. Here she learns that the god of Death Himself has blessed her with dangerous gifts--and a violent destiny. If she chooses to stay at the convent, she will be trained as an assassin and serve as a handmaiden to Death. To claim her new life, she must destroy the lives of others.
Ismae's most important assignment takes her straight into the high court of Brittany--where she finds herself woefully under prepared--not only for the deadly games of intrigue and treason, but for the impossible choices she must make. For how can she deliver Death's vengeance upon a target who, against her will, has stolen her heart?

  • What does it mean to be a handmaiden of death?

    Carol F. - 3 years 2 months ago

I was unable to put this book down and actually read all night long to complete it. I had to know what happened next. Full of palace intrigue, a budding but complicated romance and magic, this is the story of 17-year-old Ismae, who is literally the daughter of death. After being rescued from a horrific arranged marriage, Ismae finds refuge in the convent of St. Mortain, her father. After undergoing training as an assassin and developing her special magical skills with poisons and speaking to the dead, she is assigned to discover who is standing in the way of the Duchess's coronation. She meets Duval along the way and must decide between fulfilling her duties to St. Mortain and following her heart. Set in 15th century France, the novel is rich in historical detail but is fast-paced and full of mystery. The strong, capable Ismae is a delight to get to know.

  • This series is my absolute favorite!!!

    Olivia H. - 5 years 6 months ago

I was intrigued by this book’s premise—who wouldn’t be intrigued by assassin nuns in medieval France??—and picked it up on a whim. I absolutely loved it, and ended up buying it for myself before I was even finished with my library book. This is a fantastic, immersive, unique story that deserves so much more love and attention. Ismae is an amazing, badass protagonist. The friendships and enemies to lovers romance were written so well and I grew so attached. There’s all sorts of royal court drama and political intrigue, as well as literal and figurative backstabbing. I read this for the first time in 2017 and have since read it and the sequels two more times. I own every English edition of every book in the trilogy and the spin-off duology. I adore this series and highly recommend it to everyone!!! #SpringPicks

  • Beautiful Story

Grave Mercy is a beautifully written, fantastic book! I immediately ordered the next two in the series. The author takes you on a journey with Ismae as she discovers herself- her capabilities, her strength, and her desires. A book that combines history, scheming, betrayal, and romance is the perfect mix to become the page-turner that Grave Mercy is.
