"Of all the stories that argue and speculate about Shakespeare's life... here is a novel ... so gorgeously written that it transports you. --The Boston Globe

In 1580's England, during the Black Plague a young Latin tutor falls in love with an extraordinary, eccentric young woman in this "exceptional historical novel" (The New Yorker) and best-selling winner of the Women's Prize for Fiction.

Agnes is a wild creature who walks her family's land with a falcon on her glove and is known throughout the countryside for her unusual gifts as a healer, understanding plants and potions better than she does people. Once she settles with her husband on Henley Street in Stratford-upon-Avon she becomes a fiercely protective mother and a steadfast, centrifugal force in the life of her young husband, whose career on the London stage is taking off when his beloved young son succumbs to sudden fever.

A luminous portrait of a marriage, a shattering evocation of a family ravaged by grief and loss, and a tender and unforgettable re-imagining of a boy whose life has been all but forgotten, and whose name was given to one of the most celebrated plays of all time, Hamnet is mesmerizing, seductive, impossible to put down--a magnificent leap forward from one of our most gifted novelists.

  • The last name is Shakespeare

    Carolyn L. - 4 years 6 months ago

Found it a little difficult to follow. The second half of the book was right on concerning the death of a child. I read it as part of a book club reading, I don't think I would recommend the book.

  • Incredible tale told in the most beautiful style. Shakespeare would be proud!

The book itself was outstanding. I had read it before from a library copy and wanted a copy of my own. It is that good. I ordered from Half Price Books, and the copy I received was as good as new. Whether you like Shakespeare or not, you will LOVE this book if you have an appreciation for a good story and beautiful style. This had both in spades! I've recommended this to people who are not particularly avid readers and certainly not devotees of Shakespeare. They too couldn't put it down.

  • Real people

This is a lovely book. The determination never to us Shakespeare’s name was sometimes irritating but this author understands families and grief. Real people inhabit these pages.

  • Beautiful

    MICHELLE S. - 5 years 8 months ago

Highly recommend. It is not light reading, but a story to read with care and appreciation, when there is time to savor the words. Anyone whose family has lost a son or daughter will be utterly familiar with the anguish felt by those left behind. I read Hamnet on loan from my local library, as a recommendation from NPR's 2020 Book Concierge. I'll be buying a copy for my personal library.

  • You learn of Shakespeare's background.

    Donna S. - 5 years 11 months ago

It was difficult to get into. The story was OK but I did not like how it jumped from one time frame to another. With the number of characters, this made it confusing as to who was being written about.
