“There’s a saying from Maya Angelou that reminds me…When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time…it feels carved into my bones…my heart bone has healed. There's still a crack in it. I sometimes still feel it aching.” Colleen Hoover’s Heart Bones is the story of Beyah and Samson, “Two lonely kids who slipped through all the cracks, but then climbed right back up to the top of the world…Life is weird. One day you’re staring at your dead mother and a few days later you’re building a sandcastle on the beach by yourself in the dark with a dog named after a cheese.” Beyah “wasn’t expecting to end the summer with a broken heart…Hearts don’t have bones. They can’t actually break…Maybe we did grow heart bones. But what if the only way of knowing you grew a heart bone is by feeling the agony caused by the break?” “The only answer I really want to know is whether or not he actually grew a heart bone. If he, did, is his breaking right now? Because mine is.” “Does he really think I’m going to leave him to sit in jail while I move across the country as if I didn’t grow a heart bone over the summer?” “Secrets are [Beyah’s] only form of currency.” But if there’s one thing she’s learned this summer, “it’s that secrets aren’t really as valuable as…honesty.” “‘I love you.’ Those three words are a simple whisper against my skin, but they provide enough pressure that I feel my heart bone heal completely.” “Love is a lot like water. It can be calm. Raging. Threatening. Soothing. Water can be many things, but even in all its forms, it will always be water. You are my water…Go flood the whole goddamn world.”
I absolutely loved this book! I read it within five hours because I couldn’t put it down. Such a sweet inspiring story. Definitely a must read!
